Provisional Border 2020

I was born in Germany to a French father and a German mother in 1996, one year after the Schengen Agreement came into force, which guarantees freedom of movement within the borders of the Schengen states. All my life, I had never seen a closed border with Germany's neighboring countries.

With the coronavirus, however, everything happened very quickly. On March 13, 2020 Poland, the Czech Republic and Denmark announced border closures due to Covid-19, followed shortly afterwards by Germany, without consulting neighboring countries such as France. The 25th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement was canceled. A few months later, all German borders were open again.

Borders increasingly faded into the background and became barely perceptible for many people. While the EU worked for decades to remove some of their significance, it only took three months to remind people of them again. The project attempts to show the direct consequences of the border closures and the resulting shift in the meaning of the EU's internal borders.
